History of The Devon

We bet you didn’t know this was the very first purpose-built motel to be opened in the U.K. in 1955! When Percy Brend bought it in 1975, he set about upgrading the motel and the Devon Hotel was launched.

In 1997, the first function suite was added as well as Carriages Restaurant in the original Georgian part of the building. This gave the hotel a new lease of life. It was around this time that the hotel set out to have the finest year-round hanging baskets in Exeter, a tradition that continues today.

Over the last 15 years, the Devon has became a popular venue for weddings, functions and dinner dances, becoming loved as a hotel at the very heart of the Exeter community.

2015 saw the latest chapter in the hotel’s history, with a £1.5 million upgrade which involved a refurbished exterior and the addition of 20 brand new executive bedrooms and a fitness suite.

The hotel continues to evolve, combining the historic charm of its Georgian manor house with the very latest developments such as charging points for electric vehicles.
